December 28, 1932 – July 19, 2023
Britty Jean Leddy Deere, 90, of Summit, passed away Wednesday, July 19th after a lengthy illness.
She was born December 28, 1932 in McComb, MS to Charles Leddy and Elma Marsh Leddy.
Visitation will be Saturday, July 22 from 9-11 a.m. with services beginning at 11 a.m. at First Christian Church, McComb where she was a longtime member and elder. Dr. David Millican will officiate. Burial will be in Hollywood cemetery. Hartman Jones Funeral Home will handle the arrangements.
Britty was an avid tennis player from her years at McComb High School, where she lettered in tennis and basketball and was state tennis champion in 1950, her senior year.
She played in many tennis tournaments over the years and won the American Tennis Association's Best of the 70s tournament with her doubles partner, both in their 70s.
Britty was an enthusiastic baker and was known for her pound cakes, pecan pies and other delicacies. She was an avid reader of mysteries and her well-worn Bible and in her later years discovered jigsaw puzzles. She also gardened and enjoyed, mostly, watching Saints games and anything Ole Miss playing on television.
She was an "Avon Lady" for many years and a long-time employee of Holmes Stationers and Black Hawk Antiques and was a former federal census-taker.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, P. A. Deere, Jr., her son P. A. "Paddy" Deere, III and her daughter Rachel Deere Kalil, her siblings.
Survivors include daughter and son-in-law, Dr. Laurel V. Williamson and Michael of League City, Texas, and son Matt Williamson of Summit; son and daughter-in-law Andrew and Vicky Deere of McComb; daughter-in-law Kathy Deere, of McComb; grandson Josh Deere and wife Lacey and great-granddaughter, Lottie, all of Hattiesburg; granddaughter Kristen Deere, of Hattiesburg; granddaughter Jessica Kalil, of Tacoma, Washington; grandson Tonas "Buddy" Kalil, of Hattiesburg; niece Mary Pat Womack of Denham Springs, La; nephew Richard Cockerham, of Baton Rouge, La.; and first son-in-law and long-time friend John C. Hughes of Winter Park, Fl.
Pallbearers will be: Steve Cox, Steve Magee, John Hughes, Craig Haskins, Lew Herrin and Mitch Dorr.
Honorary Pallbearers are: Richard Cockerham, Ronnie Boone, Guy Shumate, Dave Parker, Matt Williamson and Gerald Austin.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to First Christian Church, PO Box 1672, McComb, MS 39649.
