Charles Harry Matthews 92, of Jayess, MS passed away May 28, 2023.
Born January 2, 1931 in Pike County MS to the late Dollie and Leon Matthews. He worked at Kellwood Manufacturing Co. until his retirement. Mr. Charles was a member at Union Primitive Baptist Church in Ruth, MS.
Visitation will be Wednesday, May 31, 2023 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Hartman-Jones Funeral Home in McComb, MS, and will resume Thursday, June 1, 2023 from 10:00 a.m. until services at 11:00 a.m. at Union Primitive Baptist Church in Ruth, MS. Elders Mickey Myers and James Conley will officiate and burial will be at the church cemetery.
In 1952, he was drafted into the U.S. Army where he served as a mortarman in the 45th Division. He was sent to battle in the Korean war. On Christmas Day in 1952, he was captured and became a prisoner of war. Throughout the eight months of his captivity his family only knew he was missing in action. When the war was over in July 1953 him and his family was happy upon his release.
Mr. Charles is proceeded in death by his parents, Dollie and Leon Matthews, his first wife Gladys Matthews, son Bobby Matthews, grandson Damien Dier, and sister Christine Alexander.
Survived by his wife Neva Matthews, daughter Susan Lassiter, daughter-in-law Debbie Seton (Bill), step-daughter Beverly Whittington (Tommy), step-son Lamar Greer (Mollie), one brother Aubrey Matthews (Jackie), two sisters Eudora Batte, Glenda Watts (Glyn); grandchildren Windy Spicer, Kelly McKinney and Joy Knight (Jeffery), step-grandchildren Christy Lambert (Brent), Jeremy Greer, Jed Whittington (Daniela), Tucker Whittington (Savanna), great-grandkids Jolina Spicer, Dustin Reid, Krystalynn, Samuel and Rileyann McKinney, step-grandchildren Leghiton, Rehett, Bowen, Logan, Kyzar, Everett, and Emmitt.
Pallbearers will be his nephews: Brady and Michael Watts, Robert Reeves, Alan Matthews, Stewart Evans and Bill Seton.
