Obituary

Colleen Moak Varnell, 96, passed away on June 10, 2023. Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 15, 2023 at Hartman Jones Funeral Home at 10 AM with the service at 11 AM. Brother Vann Windom of West McComb Baptist Church will be officiating and burial will be at Hollywood Cemetery.

Colleen was born in Norfield, MS on April 21, 1927 to Alfred Lee and Nola Moak. She went to Johnston Station Schools until moving to McComb. She then attended and graduated from McComb High School.

She married on April 6, 1946 to Charlie A. Varnell and had 5 beautiful children. She then began her working career at Kellwood starting out sewing, then instructing and supervising. After several years, she then began work in retail at Roses and later at Cato's Dress Shop. Her final employment days were spent in the McComb School System as a teacher's aide first at Kennedy, then at Otken in the library, which she dearly loved. She was a member of the West McComb Baptist Church where she also taught Sunday School for several years. Her family, her church and the Lord, and friends were the joy of her life.

Along life's path, there was also sadness. She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Virginia Carlisle; a brother, Alfred Lee Moak; husband, Charlie; a daughter, Hallie Sue Varnell; a grand daughter, Corey Allen Varnell; a daughter-in-law, Carolyn Ross Varnell; and a son-in-law, Randy Pigott.

She is survived by her children Charlene "Shorty", Charles Richard (Ric) and wife Mary Allen, David Lee, and Virginia Ann (Ginger) Pigott. She is the grandmother of Charles Bowan (Bo) Varnell and wife Kim, Mary Colleen "Cobie" Varnell, Katelan Ross Varnell, Charley Diane Pigott, James Clifton (Jake) and wife Liza Pigott, and Mattie Elise Pigott. She is the great-grandmother of Dylan Scott and Tori Masirah Varnell, and Waylon and Birdie Pigott. Also, several nieces and nephews and her honorary daughter Ann.

Special thanks to the caregivers Mary, Tick, and Tasha for loving her and helping to keep her in her home until she was 95, also a special thanks to McComb Nursing and Rehab for the care during her last year of life.
