David Allen
Young
November 1, 1938 – September 2, 2024
David Young passed away peacefully on September 2 nd at the age of 85. David (or "Papa" as his grandchildren called him) was raised in McComb by his parents William and Jimmie Young together with his six siblings. David graduated McComb High School in 1957 and as he liked to say, caught the bus the next day to get out of town. This bus took him to enlist in the U.S. Air Force where he served for seven years before being honorably discharged. After the air force he spent most of his professional life working as an engineer for Itek Corporation both in California and Massachusetts. The focus of his work involved designing reconnaissance cameras that flew on aircraft such as the SR-71, U2 and on satellites. His career took him around the globe including extended periods of work in India, Australia, England, Japan and South Korea. He was proudest of the work he did while assigned to NASA in support of the Apollo space program where he was heavily involved in designing cameras for the lunar landers and their support spacecraft. David married Suzanne Barette in 1968, who preceded him in death. Together they raised two children in Massachusetts: Lisa (Matthew) Sheehan of Chelmsford, MA and Brandon (Barbara Teske-Young) Young of Wauwatosa, WI, who survive him. He is further survived by his brother Oliver (Jo Ann) Young of McComb; his six grandchildren Luke, Ben and Samantha Sheehan of Massachusetts and Keagan, Parker and Charlotte Young of Wisconsin. He was also blessed with many nieces and nephews who he loved to spend time with. Most important to David was education; he reinforced this in almost every discussion with his grandchildren – always asking them about school and their studies. He also lived this by earning his B.S in Engineering from the University of Massachusetts – Lowell while at the same time raising his young children and working full-time for Itek. Following his retirement in 1998, he returned to McComb to live closer to his brother Oliver and his family, who he loved to spend time with and who helped him to live independently until recently. We would like to thank the caregivers at Aston Court in McComb for taking excellent care of David during the past two years. A celebration of life will be held for David at a future date. In lieu of flowers feel free to make a donation to the charity of your choice.
