Hudora Cain
Lewman
February 11, 1934 – February 26, 2024
Hudora Cain Lewman passed away peacefully at her home on February 26, 2024, with her husband Bill at her side, as he had been for the past 71 years.
Visitation will be Thursday, February 29, 2024, from 9:00 AM until services at 11:00 AM at the Hartman-Jones Funeral Home. Dr. Larry LeBlanc will officiate. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery, Summit, MS, with services there by Bro. Brian McKee. Hartman-Jones Funeral Home of McComb is in charge of arrangements.
Hudora was born on February 11, 1934, in Summit, MS. She was the daughter of Hugh Orville Cain and Alice Booker Cain.
Hudy was raised in Summit and with the exception of one year in California and one year in Pensacola, FL, during World War II lived her entire life in Summit. She was a product of Summit's schools back when Summit still had its own school system and her love for Summit was only rivaled by her love for her husband William (Bill) Lewman and the Lord. Hudy had a zest for life and she shared her creativity with all the people she encountered, never meeting a stranger during her many travels.
Hudy married Bill within a month of her high school graduation whereupon the newlyweds immediately left for Indiana, where Bill was stationed in the guard. Other than this stay in a small apartment out of state Hudy never again departed God's country (her name for Pike County) on a semi-permanent basis, although they traveled all over the country and she traveled all over the world doing mission work. Hudy retired from First Bank after 31 years but long before her retirement she had worked long enough that she earned four weeks a year vacation time – she decided to take two weeks for fun and two weeks for the Lord and once she retired there was no time limit on her travel and work for the Lord.
Her sense of compassion for others, her energy and her creativity were simply unparalleled – she painted watercolors, oils, acrylics (literally gifting hundreds of her beautiful paintings to friends and family), she sewed beautifully, crocheted an untold number of baby blankets, sang in the church choir for sixty years, set a beautiful table and prepared wonderful meals no matter how many showed up at the door (her fried chicken and caramel cakes were legendary).
Hudy was preceded in death by her parents.
She is survived by her husband Bill Lewman; two sons, Steve Lewman (Marty), Ruth, MS, and Dr. Randy Lewman (Tracey), Okolona, MS; three grandsons, Casey (Georgiana) Lewman, Cody (Elizabeth) Lewman, and Ross Gray (Alyssa) Lewman; six great grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Betty Lewman and Pris Price; numerous nieces and nephews; one special cousin, Trudy Berger and a very special friend, Delores Moak.
The family would like to express sincere thanks and appreciation to the staff of Hospice Compassus and to the CNAs who cared for Hudy on a daily basis over the past several months: Bobbie Fultz, Tangeline Funchess and Shelia Pittman.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that those so desiring direct memorial contributions to FBC Summit, P.O. Box 100, Summit, MS 39666.
