Jeanette was born on July 20, 1935, to the late Johnny Dudley and Lanell Robbins Hammond of Monticello, MS. She married James in August 1955 after meeting him at a singing at Topeka-Tilton United Methodist church a couple of years prior and as the story was told, her grandmother had arranged a special dinner table for her to host the two of them during lunch. James was a member of a quartet group that was known and sought after across southwest MS to perform and sing the "old time" gospel hymns. Jeanette also loved singing and worshipping along with her husband and his group. Beginning when her children were teenagers, the family sang as a quartet for several years in local churches and special events, all loving old time gospel music. Known as Aunt Jeanette to nieces and nephews and great nieces/nephews, Grandmother to all family after the grandchildren came along as well as the great-grandchildren, and Mrs. Jeanette to friends and neighbors, she greeted all with a welcoming smile and invitation.
She was a devoted homemaker that spent her early years raising her two children and helping her husband with their diversified farming, carpentry/painting, and vegetable gardening activities. She and her husband served as 4-H Volunteer Leaders for many years while her children participated in 4-H activities. Upon her children graduating high school, she began her public working career at Howell Motor Company in Summit for several years and then Magnolia Federal Savings and Loan in McComb where she retired as a Loan Officer. Jeanette was a lifetime Methodist, converted her husband from Baptist early in their marriage, and was a member (51 years) of Summit United Methodist Church which she served loyally and in numerous leadership capacities over the years.
She loved gardening, sewing, cooking and her home and possessions were always her pride and joy. She worked continuously to keep her home environment clean, neat, and tidy. Jeanette was known all around her community, church, and local towns as one that always had a great vegetable garden which she shared with many. She took immense pride in the fact that she and her husband grew and preserved (frozen and home canned) most all their food except for a few staple items for most of their married lives. Along with her vegetable gardens, she loved flowers and worked tirelessly in her flower "beds/gardens" around her home. Jeanette was often referred to as one of "the hardest working women they knew." She was a wonderful, caring, and loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother that was known by family, friends, neighbors, and others as setting a delicious, plentiful, and delightful table. She took considerable pride in her abilities to sew and crafted many of the dresses she and her daughter wore over the early years. Quilting became a hobby in later years, and she made each of the grandchildren a quilt and then arranged to provide each great-grandchild with a special blanket. She was a most caring person who served others before herself and prided in being able to serve someone her homemade food items and/or helping them during illness and distress. She will be missed tremendously by her family, friends, and all those who knew and loved her.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Johnny and Lanell Hammond; her husband, James B. Williams; one brother, Jimmy Hammond, Monticello, MS; five brothers-in-law, Donald Roark, Ridgeland, MS, Walter "Ruff" Williams (Blanche), McComb, MS, Clifton and Lamar Williams, Bogue Chitto, MS, Mike C.
