Obituary

Jesse "JL" Louis Duncan, 87, of Summit, MS passed away June 21, 2025 at The Claiborne in McComb, MS.

A visitation will be held Thursday, June 26, 2025 at Hartman Jones Funeral Home from 9 AM until services at 11 AM.

JL was born on December 21, 1937 to the late Webster H. Duncan and Myrtis Rushing Duncan. He was first and foremost a disciple of Christ and raised his family in church, taught Sunday School, and was a student of Prophecy. He graduated from Summit High School in 1956 and married Vanetta McCall in 1958. They were blessed with three children and since eleven grandchildren to whom he was known as "Pawpaw." They always put an extra 'sparkle' in his eyes.

He was an Electrician and Builder who built his own home as well as assisting his son in building his. He was a Welder for ICG Railroad where he worked as a Carman. He was a gardener who grew watermelons that put many 'in the shade', as well as an avid Hunter and Fisherman, and especially loved 'Whitetail Deer" and catching 'Spotted Cat' and 'White Perch.' He was a Steel Guitarist who played several other instruments and was a recording artist as well as a live musician. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

He is preceded in death by his parents and his wife of 62 loving years Vanetta McCall Duncan.

He is survived by his children Reggie (Dusty) Duncan, Clay (Mechelle) Duncan, and Debbie Duncan; four grandchildren Lindsay (Chance) Cater, Jake Duncan, Brady (Ashton) Duncan, and Kaley (Blake) Rowell; seven great-grandchildren Eli Cater, Austin Cater, Owen Cater, Anna Cater, Sol Glover, Emily Rowell, and Henry Duncan; four siblings Wendell (Linda) Duncan, Rev. Charles "Chuck" (Charlene) Duncan, Rev. Bobby (Sandra) Duncan, and Michael "Mike" (Susan) Duncan; along with a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Pallbearers will be Eli Cater, Austin Cater, Brady Duncan, Jake Duncan, Jason Duncan, Chance Cater, and Blake Rowell. Honorary Pallbearers will be Wendell Duncan and Mike Duncan.

The family would like to express their thanks to The Claiborne for their compassion in taking care of Mr. Duncan over the past few years.
