Jill Gatlin
Nunnery
August 20, 1935 – March 25, 2025
Ramona Jill Gatlin Nunnery, 89, of the Thompson Community in Smithdale, died March 25, 2025 at Southwest MS Regional Medical Center in McComb, MS. Visitation will be held at Thompson Baptist Church on Wednesday, March 26, 2025 from 12:00 Noon until services at 2:00 PM. Dr. James Bradford will officiate. Hartman Jones Funeral Home will be in charge of the arrangements.
Jill was born on August 20, 1935, to Alton B. and Florence Hutchinson Gatlin. She was devoted to her husband of 62 years, 'the Tall Man', the late Billy Nunnery, and the apple of her eye was her son, Gene, and his three sons.
Jill loved her childhood home on the banks of the Amite River, which was built by her grandfather. Her best days were spent up and down the river and she often reminisced about her times growing up there, swimming, fishing, and being with her friends. In her later years, she would often talk about her mother who was a beautician and operated Florence's Beauty Shop in their home. After Jill was married, she and her husband, continued operating the farm that her father had started. She was a faithful hand and was often seen helping to work the cows along with her husband.
Jill had worked at Kellwood in McComb as a bookkeeper, and later worked for the Amite County School Board of Education, for many years until she retired.
Jill loved to tell the story of how she came to know and love her Lord Jesus at an early age. She would tell exactly where she was sitting in the old church building, and how she was baptized in the cool water of the Amite River. Jill was a very faithful member of Thompson Baptist Church where she had served as a Sunday School teacher, sang in the choir, and was the church secretary for many years.
Jill was a very sweet, humble and charming lady. She often spoke of herself as being shy, but her actions never showed that. She was always helping others, and making everyone feel very welcomed in her presence.
Mrs. Nunnery was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and an infant sister, Patsy Ruth Gatlin, and a brother and sister in law, Jack and Annie Ruth Gatlin.
Survivors include her son and daughter in law, Gene and Missy Nunnery, of Thompson; three grandchildren and their spouses, Curtis and Courtney Nunnery, Corey and Kimberly Nunnery, Cole and Shelby Nunnery; and three great-grandchildren, Carter, Charly, and Anistyn Nunnery; and nieces and nephews, and a host of friends and family who loved her dearly.
Pallbearers will be Cody Crawford, Jason Edwards, Mark White, Zac White, Tucker Whittington, and Tom Maxwell.
