Jimmy's life was centered around the community of Gillsburg, a place that he dearly loved. He was born there on July 30, 1935, the only son of Jim Hunter and Lena Mae McMillan Newman. He graduated from Gillsburg High School, Class of 1954. Jimmy loved playing sports, especially football and was known for his quickness on the field. After graduating, Jimmy joined his father's tractor dealership, eventually purchasing the John Deere franchise known as Newman Tractor Service. Jimmy was an excellent mechanic and completed many John Deere sponsored workshops to increase his knowledge of tractors and farm equipment.
Jimmy married his high school sweetheart, Margie Pearl Knotts, on June 8, 1955 and they made their home in Gillsburg where they raised their son and daughter. The two were married for 70 years and enjoyed traveling by motorcycle to numerous states. Jimmy enjoyed relaxing at his camp on the Amite River and spending time with his grandchildren. He continued to work as his expertise for repairing older model farm equipment was valued. He never met a stranger and enjoyed showing visitors around his shop where he collected memorabilia. He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his son Danny Keith Newman; four sisters Catherine Elizabeth Newman, Helen Marie Reynolds, Geraldine Wall, and Hettie Jean Kliesh; two sisters-in-law Dorothy Spears Knotts and Alma Lea Knotts Lancon; and six brothers-in-law Olen Brumfield, Bud Oliver Kliesh, William Benjamin Knotts, Lovelace Lancon, Jesse Marshall Reynolds, and William Buford Wall.
