The youngest of five, he was the baby boy of Lamar Sr, and Maggie Stokes, born on November 14,1925 in Amite County. Always a young man of mischief, he and his brothers and sisters had many adventures growing up in the woods and areas of Southwest Mississippi creating stories too many to tell at this time.
He served in the Navy in World War II and returned home to attend college at Copiah Lincoln Junior College and to graduate from Mississippi State University in 1949. While at Co-Lin Junior College he met the love of his life, Pauline Taylor. Married in 1949 they moved to Simpson County as the Extension Agent where he was even more involved with agriculture. He moved to Pike County in 1950 where he lived until his death.
He led a varied life starting with a small business owner, worked off-shore in the oil industry, and finally settled in the job he most loved, Member Service Manager for Magnolia Electric Power for 22 years, where he helped many in Southwest Mississippi to receive reliable electric service for the first time in their lives. Even after retiring in 1988, he volunteered to assist in times of natural disaster such as Hurricane Katrina and as late as the 2019 Tornado in the Jayess area.
Always involved in community service, he was a member of Pisgah United Methodist Church for 72 years, He received the 2006 McComb Exchange Club Award for Book of Golden Deeds, was selected as the Junior Auxiliary King for 2009, served on numerous boards including Pike County Farm Bureau, Pike County Fair Board, and was very involved in the Pisgah Men's Club where he worked in repairing old bicycles to donate to needy children, and then eventually repairing electric wheelchairs and providing them to the local community as needed. In addition, he started an annual boiled peanut event where he provided three local nursing home's occupants with boiled peanuts and then added the Liberty care facility to the list, he was a member of the McComb City Lodge #382 and had just received his 70 year pin.
He was preceded in death by his wife of almost 71 years, his parents and four brothers and sisters.
He had two daughters, Phillis (Jeff) Waller, and Dixie (Trey) Fouche; Four grandchildren, Jeremy (Daniela) Waller, Jared (Jodi) Waller, Will (Melissa) Kimmel, and Stephen Kimmel; Four great grandchildren, Bracey Waller, Bennett Waller, Maisie Kimmel, and Natalie Spring; along with many great and great-great nieces and nephews.
Always concerned about the education of the youth of Mississippi, he and his wife established scholarships at both Copiah Lincoln Community College and at Southwest Mississippi Community College. Therefore, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Co-Lin Foundation's Lamar and Pauline Stokes Scholarship or to Southwest Mississippi Community College Foundation's Lamar and Pauline Stokes Scholarship.
