Obituary

Lyman Bernell Wilson, known to many of his friends as "Doc", passed away peacefully with family members by his bedside at Liberty Community Living Center on August 7, 2022.

Visitation is 9:00 a.m. Wednesday, at Gillsburg Baptist Church until services at 11:00 a.m. Dr. Cory Wilson and Dr. Victor Walsh will officiate. Burial will be in the Newman Cemetery in Gillsburg. Hartman-Jones Funeral Home of McComb is in charge of arrangements.

Bernell was born February 9, 1946. Until his health failed several years ago, he spent his entire life on the family farm in Gillsburg. He enjoyed fishing and visiting with friends, neighbors, and family members. He was known to show his love for others by giving them candy or gum, especially the children.

Early in his life, everyone who knew him recognized that he was special. He spent two years at Ellisville State School learning how to cope with his condition. After returning he was employed by Gillsburg Service Center and later Stewart & Williams, Inc. It was during that time that he became the "Pac Man" champion of the area. He spent his last four and a half years as a resident of the Liberty Community Living Center. There he made many new friends.

Bernell was preceded in death by his parents, Claude and Effie Newman Wilson. Siblings, James Paul Wilson, Bernard Wilson, Valarie Martin Wesberry, Arnetta Taylor and a special caregiver Mary Torrence.

He is survived by two brothers, David and wife Brenda Wilson, Dennis and wife Ann Wilson, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Our family thanks the entire staff of the Liberty Community Living Center and Hospice Compassus for their support and care. Also, special thanks to his niece, Marilyn Burg, and friends Greg and Linda Wall for their love and support.

Pallbearers are Brad Wilson, Jarett Wilson, Yancey Wentworth, Darin Newman, Randall Smith, and Fred Williams.

Honorary pallbearers are Greg Wall, Louie Smith, Winston Newman, Malcolm Wilson, Farley Taylor, Darrell Totino, Steve Bickman and Larry Smith.
