Mike
Boggs
December 21, 1962 – April 11, 2023
James Mikell Boggs was born in Jackson, Mississippi on December 21, 1962, which happened to be his dad's twenty-fourth birthday, and two days after his sixtieth birthday, he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. With his wife, children and other family members by his side, Mike ran into the arms of his Lord and Savior on the morning of April 11, 2023.
Affectionately known to many as Jimmy Mike, he was not only the baby of three children to Gary L. and Juanita McCaskell Boggs, but he was also their only son. "Baby" and "only boy" were two titles he carried with pride.
On any day that ended in "y", Mike's childhood was spent either tagging along with his older sisters and mom or formulating mayhem on his own. While the family's patriarch was serving the country in the United States Army, Mike could usually be found where he wasn't supposed to be. You said "pool" and Mike heard "pond"; you mentioned "hike" and he was off on his "dirt-bike". Mike Boggs was as mischievous as his dimples were deep!
Having spent the majority of his teen years in Enterprise, Alabama, Mike regaled the school's blue-and-white as a Wildcat until his parents opted to move to Mississippi after his junior year of high school. He subsequently graduated from Franklin County High School in 1980 and immediately began working for the Arnold family until he embarked upon life on land-rigs. This venture led to a stint with the Wilson family doing sandblasting work on water towers. Just over fifteen years of working for others and Mike knew he was ready to lead his own charge, becoming the head of the newly purchased family business, Southwest Auto.
Not ever thinking Mike would settle down, he defied all odds when he charmed his way into the heart of the former LaVoyce Froust. LaVoyce agreed to marry him shortly after her high school graduation in 1984 and their family began soon thereafter. His namesake, Mikell'Ann, was born in 1985 and his dad's namesake, Gary Bronson Bubba, in 1988. The family of four made Franklin County their home until 1997 when McComb became home, and this remained true until 2022, when Mike and LaVoyce moved to Summit.
While Mike Boggs's greatest accomplishment was his indeed his family, his pride and joy were his two granddaughters, Kaylea and Brooklyn Wagner. If anyone was able to juggle two apples of his eye, it was "Poppa", the name his two granddaughters lovingly called him, and if either one of them called, he went running. From the beginning, Poppa poured everything he had into his girls. From attending their school events, coaching their sports teams, taking them to everything in-between, their cherished "Superman" exemplified "strive for greatness" into both of them.
Although Mike's oldest sister and oldest niece agree that his love of being a prankster combined with his genuine love of children were two of his best character traits, it was his love of Jesus that steadied at the forefront. Mike accepted Jesus Christ in 2000 and it was his overwhelming love of Him that instantly took precedence. While he could be repeatedly found either watching his granddaughters play ball both at home and across the southeast or carrying a truck-load of people to watch an Alabama sports event, Mike served God's people. He was a constant and consistent volunteer with both the seventh-grade boys and CBMI at First Baptist Summit, spent five summers doing mission work in Ecuador, and single-handedly spearheaded Pike County Youth Sports.
The lyrics from the infamous song of the late 50s could not ring truer: to know Mike Boggs was to love Mike Boggs, but to up the ante…to know Mike Boggs was to be loved by Mike Boggs.
From recognizing chores that needed to be done and doing them without being asked to witnessing to inmates at the Pike County Jail in his final days on earth, Mike Boggs lived a life of serving The LORD by serving others, and in the words of his pastor, "Mike was a true servant that taught me to be a better man, husband, and Christian."
Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Gary and Juanita Boggs. He is survived by his wife of thirty-eight years, LaVoyce, his children, Mikell'Ann Boggs and Gary Bronson Bubba Boggs, and his granddaughters, Kaylea Wagner and Brooklyn Wagner. He is also survived by his uncle, Charlie Boggs, his mother-in-law, Maw Maw Bessie, sisters, Garilyn Lunsford and Kathy Boggs-Gray and her husband Cammie, his sisters-in-law Bessie Faye and her husband John, and Denise Froust, his nieces, Chasity Harrington and her husband Scott, Katy Buckley and her husband Leslie, Britnee Gile and her husband Kenny, McCaskell Gray, Rebekah Gray, Hannah Smith and her husband Brandon, his nephews, Garrith Lunsford and his wife Jackie, Wes Jones, and Hogan Watts and his wife Tori.
